Try to accomplish things by yourself. If you have that spirit, you can contribute even if you have no experience.

Hello, this is Akaiwa from the Corporate Planning Division. This time, we had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Hoshina, who is making a significant impact in the Social Game Division. Mr. Hoshina, who has been passionate about games since childhood, joined us as a new graduate to challenge himself as an inexperienced game planner. Within just six months of joining, he was involved in the release of a new title and has been making remarkable strides. He shared insights about his university days, his current job responsibilities, the qualities needed to succeed as a game planner without prior experience, and his future goals. This content will be valuable for those interested in the game industry or those looking to take on a new role without prior experience. We hope you find it informative.

Kei Hoshina

Social Game Division, Operations Department, Game Planner, Rudel Inc.

Graduated from the School of Economics, Gakushuin University, with a major in Business Administration. Since his first year of university, he has been involved in doing contract work managing a game community site. During his job search, he aspired to become a game planner and was attracted by the potential opportunities, leading him to join Rudel, a company in the Reazon Group in April of 2023. He started as an intern in January 2023, and after becoming full-time, he has been responsible for managing in-house game titles. Currently, he is engaged in planning new title initiatives, adjusting game balance, and creating game specifications.

Involved in the game industry since college and aspired to become a game planner.

Akaiwa

First, could you tell us about your university days, Mr. Hoshina?

Hoshina

I studied financial data analysis while going to school for Economics. Additionally, from my first year, I was involved in managing an arcade game community site and official SNS for an IT company on a contract basis. Since childhood, I have loved games, and a senior who knew I was an arcade game enthusiast, even working part-time at a game center during university, suggested that I try working at their IT company. I was responsible for promoting fan communities by highlighting outstanding user comments and articles, and engaging directly with fans.

Akaiwa

So, you were involved with games through contract work even during university! Did working with your favorite arcade games give you any insights?

Hoshina

Originally, games were just for enjoyment for me, but working in the field made me realize the importance of revenue. It was also important to learn about what companies think and how they operate behind the scenes to improve game sales.

Akaiwa

Understanding the realities of the game industry before starting your career is definitely an advantage. What did you focus on when searching for a company during your job hunt?

Hoshina

Given my love for games and my experience in game-related work during university, I wanted to be on the side that provides game content. Therefore, I focused on finding companies in the game industry, specifically aiming to become a game planner involved in content planning.

Akaiwa

And that’s how you came across Reazon.

Hoshina

I discovered Reazon through a job search website. When I visited their recruitment site, I was intrigued by the stories of people who started as inexperienced hires and went on to become directors. During the recruitment interview, I also heard about cases where people transitioned from part-time to full-time roles, which gave me the impression that I would be given a lot of opportunities. I wanted to engage in a wide range of tasks and provide game content myself, rather than just mastering a narrow scope of work in a large organization. I felt that Reazon could offer me that opportunity, so I decided to join.

Challenging to plan for the release of a new title with no experience.

Akaiwa

It seems you were attracted by the amount of freedom. What kind of work have you been involved in since joining the company?

Hoshina

As a game planner, I’ve been involved in planning and operations. I focus on monitoring customer trends to provide better experiences. For example, I analyze mission progress and guild battle activity to understand needs and then develop new initiatives to enhance enjoyment for more users. By implementing these ideas, we’ve been able to energize our customers and boost sales.

Akaiwa

It’s clear that addressing user needs and making improvements directly contributed to the results. What kind of work are you currently handling?

Hoshina

I’m working on preparing various specifications and release tasks for new game titles. This involves playing through the game to check for any overlooked issues and making balance adjustments. Although my role is in operations, I also get to challenge myself with planning. I’m involved in creating game specifications, such as deciding where to place certain voice lines or how to structure tutorials. This requires a different perspective from operations, which has been a valuable learning experience.

Akaiwa

Having worked on both existing and new titles, do you notice any differences in how you approach or think about each type of work?

Hoshina

With existing titles, we can base new initiatives on past examples and data, whereas for new titles, there’s no data to rely on. This makes it crucial to discuss and decide on strategies closely with the team. New titles also incorporate elements like 3D character models that haven’t been used in previous titles, so I feel a sense of responsibility as the company takes on new challenges. However, the common goal in both cases is to deliver high-quality content to customers while pursuing sales.

Akaiwa

Lastly, could you share what you find most rewarding about your job?

Hoshina

Realizing my dream of being on the side that provides game content is incredibly rewarding. I particularly enjoy receiving positive feedback, such as increased sales or higher mission completion rates, in response to initiatives I've implemented. I want to continue offering games and initiatives that are valued by a wide audience, so I’m committed to challenging myself in various tasks and ensuring that I release content that meets my standards without compromise.

An environment that challenges new employees with a positive attitude.

Akaiwa

It sounds like you’re continuing to take on challenges to improve game development! Is there a particular episode or experience from your work so far that stands out?

Hoshina

One memorable experience was when, despite starting with no knowledge, I raised my hand to take on the challenge of designing missions, and was entrusted with that responsibility. It was impressive to see that even as a young employee, if you show initiative, you’re given opportunities. The environment here allows for endless possibilities. Also, if you actively share ideas and they make sense, you’re given the chance to implement them. I appreciate the company culture where you can openly share opinions with supervisors and senior colleagues.

Akaiwa

You have a strong spirit of challenge. Where do you think this drive comes from?

Hoshina

I believe it stems from my experience of repeating a year for university entrance exams. I was not very good at thinking and acting on my own. Initially, I considered becoming a public servant as suggested by my parents and aimed for a local national university that many of my peers were targeting. However, I failed the entrance exams. With the extra time available, I decided to reconsider what I wanted to do and how I wanted to study, committing to act on my own intentions. I borrowed 1 million yen from my parents to cover all expenses for the university entrance process. I focused on studying in a library rather than a cram school and searched for my target schools based on whether they aligned with what I wanted to achieve. This proactive approach and experience of doing things on my own contributed to my spirit of taking on challenges.

Akaiwa

It sounds like your time repeating a year was a turning point in your life! Although you’ve been progressing smoothly in your career, handling new titles within just six months, are there any current challenges you're facing?

Hoshina

I still feel that my experience in game operations is insufficient. Even when I carefully consider and propose ideas to my supervisors, I sometimes receive feedback about aspects I hadn't considered. I tend to focus on the immediate tasks at hand, but I want to expand my perspective to think from various viewpoints like my supervisors do. My goal is to gain experience, broaden my perspective, and improve my ability to execute better initiatives and increase the speed of improvements.

The most joyful thing is the connection among customers that is created through games.

Akaiwa

At Reazon, many game planners join the company with no prior experience and thrive. What qualities do you think are necessary for a game planner at Reazon?

Hoshina

I believe a proactive mindset is essential—one that involves constantly generating and sharing ideas. Additionally, it's important to not only enjoy games from a player's perspective but also to view them from a business standpoint. If you can think about and execute initiatives that are not only fun for users but also contribute to revenue, then even those with no prior experience can become successful in this role.

Akaiwa

So, having a business perspective and a spirit of challenge are crucial! What do you find particularly appealing about Reazon's games?

Hoshina

The ability to provide not only the excitement and enjoyment of gameplay but also to facilitate connections between users through features like GvG content is a major appeal. During university, I was involved in managing a game community site and experienced the value of communication and enjoyment that arises from user connections. Games are a medium through which people interact. Fighting alongside friends in guild battles and experiencing the excitement, or having lively conversations with game buddies—providing a medium that fosters such wonderful connections is something I’m very proud of.

Akaiwa

It must be incredibly rewarding to contribute to creating connections that wouldn’t exist without games! Finally, could you share your future goals with us?

Hoshina

My goal is to eventually become a game director, so for now, I aim to become a lead planner by continuously challenging myself and gaining experience. I want to devise and provide initiatives that elicit positive responses from customers. To achieve this, I plan to enhance my ability to analyze customer trends, increase my input by playing various games, and generate many ideas. I’m also interested in management, so I aspire to be a supervisor who can foster an open and equal relationship with new team members. My ideal is to be a leader who can communicate effectively and help mentor and develop juniors based on my own experiences. I want to approach every aspect of my work with sincerity to achieve this.

Akaiwa

I look forward to seeing your continued success, Mr. Hoshina! Thank you very much for your valuable time today!
